Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend where your ads cost exactly what each order makes before ads. It is your selling price divided by your profit per order before ad costs.
Break-even ROAS = sale price ÷ (sale price − product cost)
If you add average shipping, fees or other costs per order, they come off the profit first, which raises the ROAS you need.
Break-even CPA is the same idea per order: the most you can pay in ads for one sale and still not lose money. Above your break-even ROAS you make a profit; below it, you are paying to sell.
Most brands want a target well above break-even to cover returns, refunds and overheads. The 20% figure shows the ROAS you need to keep a fifth of every sale as profit.

There is no single good number. A good ROAS is any ROAS above your break-even, with enough room left for returns and overheads. A brand with high margins can be profitable at 1.8; a low-margin brand may need 4 or more.
